Alice Diop

Alice Diop is a French director and editor of Senegalese origin, born in 1978, who represents an original and necessary voice in contemporary European cinema. After a career as an editor working with established directors, Diop pursues directing with the documentary "Vers la tendresse" (2016), followed by "Afroméricanité" (2011) and a series of shorts exploring questions of identity, race, and social marginality. Her narrative debut, "Saint Omer" (2022), is an extraordinarily ambitious work adapting the true case of Cheryl Fergison, a Black woman who killed her daughter, as an intellectual meditation on motherhood, responsibility, and racial justice. The film receives a nomination for the Palme d'Or at Cannes and establishes Diop as a director of remarkable psychological sensitivity and historical awareness, capable of transforming true crime into philosophical reflection.
