Kantemir Balagov is among the most promising filmmakers of the new Russian generation, capable of confronting complex themes with rare sensitivity and extraordinary visual power. Born in 1991 in the Caucasus, he has developed a cinematic style characterized by profound psychological tension and a narrative construction that challenges the viewer. His debut feature Closeness, presented at the Berlin Film Festival in 2017, sparked immediate critical attention for its raw and intimate representation of inexpressible grief, binding the camera to an almost unbearable claustrophobia. The work addresses the theme of loss through the perspective of a mother and a schoolmate, revealing the emotional fractures that mark ordinary lives.
