IMDb ↗

Greece · 1973

Yorgos Lanthimos is one of the most original and provocative filmmakers of contemporary cinema. Born in Greece, he has developed a distinctive style characterised by cold aesthetic distance, unnatural dialogue, and a profoundly estranging vision of the world. His films explore power dynamics, desire, and the absurdity of the human condition with subtle cruelty. After experimental early work in his home country, he achieved international recognition with Dogtooth, a masterwork of genre cinema that treats the family as a microcosm of totalitarianism. He subsequently consolidated his reputation with The Killing of a Sacred Deer, a psychological thriller of rare intensity produced by A24, and Poor Things, a gothic fantasy film where eccentricity becomes the true narrative language. Lanthimos's filmography is characterised by formal freedom, a propensity for psychological horror, and cutting humour that refuses emotional consolation, making him one of the most authentic voices in contemporary cinema.

Yorgos Lanthimos presented films at Venice Film Festival and 82nd Venice International Film Festival 2025.
